All Because You Told Me So - Shivaree |
] |
This is a post to say: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everyone!!!
Also to note that I am really immature and like to look up the origins of swears in the OED when I get bored.
"1675 HOBBES Odyssey XVIII. 310 Ulysses looking sourly answered, You Bitch." "1675 C. COTTON Poet. Wks. (1765) 177 Jove, thou now art going a Bitching."
and finally...
c. A primitive form of lamp used in Alaska and Canada. 1904 E. ROBINS Magnetic North I. 233 ‘I'll light a piece of fat pine,’ shouted the Boy... ‘Where's your bitch?’ said Dillon... ‘Haven't you got a condensed milk can with some bacon grease in it, and a rag wick?’
I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on the current use of that one.
Right, back to being a mature, sensible person who does not abuse the wonders of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Rob Zombie - Living Dead Girl |
] |
Having run out of alternative methods of procrastination, I’m turning to my trusty livejournal to prevent me from having to study for tomorrow’s Italian test. I’m justifying this because I’ve not updated in an age and a half, the perhaps the live journal reading public has been craving stories of my adventures in the great north. Most likely not, but it’s either this or irregular verb forms.
Sooo, Canada. I’m enjoying Queen’s a lot. I’ve been here for a month, and I’m entering my fourth week of classes. I had a ridiculous frosh week, the intensity of which will never be able to be adequately described. Classes are challenging and interesting, and with the exception of Philosophy, I’m enjoying all of them. My favorites are German and Film. My German course is actually a 300 level German history course that’s 100% auf Deutsch. We’re learning about the Middle Ages and I just wrote an essay on knights this weekend. Sometimes it can be a bit intimidating, as there’s only one other first year in the class, and everyone’s accent is better than mine. Luckily thanks to Herr Wagner’s insanity last year, I’ve got a leg up on grammar and writing, my TA didn’t even destroy my essay when she was looking it over yesterday!
Film is consistently interesting. I really like my professor and the TA in charge of my tutorial group is pretty cool too (even if he pops his collar and always wears hats). We have two lectures, one tutorial, and a screening each week, and thus far we’ve watched Psycho, Shivers, Rebel without a Cause, and My American Cousin. This week we’re talking about the Canadian film industry, which is interesting from my perspective because we’re also discussing how so many Canadian films make use of an American central character. I feel like the tutorial discussion on Friday will be fun. I’m also working on a group story board project.
I’ve made friends with most of my house (West Campus is divided into houses, four floors each with like nine rooms per floor, two houses make up one section of building, so I’m in Boucher/Bryce house) and we have parties and adventures together. They’re slowly introducing me to Canadian snack foods (ketchup flavored chips aren’t too bad actually) and they only make fun of me for being an American half the time. Also, I've become a pretty big fan of Tim Hortons.
Right, should probably start studying if I want to go to Salsa (the dance, not the food) tonight. Perhaps I’ll make an effort to update more, or I could be lying to myself.
Bis Spaeter!

Have officially moved to the Garden State. On Monday morning we threw all of my belongings into the Honda and Caitlin and I drove through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, until we finally reached Cherry Hill, New Jersey. We only almost set the car on fire once (there were some issues at a gas station in the asshole of Ohio), and we managed not to get eaten by the truck with teeth. All in all, it was a very successful road trip. We may not have had life-changing philosophical discussions or written beat poetry, but we had fun and arrived safely so it was a fair trade off.
It’s starting to occur to me that this whole "next year" thing that I keep talking about is less than two weeks away, which is starting to freak me out. There is a host of adjectives that I could use to describe my emotional state right now, but since they're probably similar to those of every other would-be freshman on the planet, I'll just express my hopes that Queen's will be wonderful.
The new dog is very nice. He loves playing ball to an unhealthy degree. His name is Sundance, but we're working on something better. Suggestions? He's a total sweetheart and we're already getting along famously. I was definitely right in thinking that my parent's house needed a dog. He really makes the place more complete.
Am already missing Wisconsin, and have received an official offer to live on site at Bristol next summer, which I'm seriously considering. It would mean crossing over the threshold to genuine "rennie" status, but having just finished my fifth season at Bristol, who am I really kidding at this point? Thinking about it makes me cock my head to the side and sort of smile, but I'm not making any concrete plans without knowing what opportunities lay ahead at Queen's. Still, it could be exciting.
Made a delicious pudding cake tonight, and also discovered really cute mini-toast at the insane grocery store.
Blah. I'm tired and incoherent and my contacts are being bothersome, so I think I'll call this an entry and be done.

EDIT: Because I have shocked and offended my dear sister with the emo quality of the above post, I have decided to make amends, and offer this humble picture as a token of my regret for making her worry.
Also, "it" was in reference to the end of my time working wtih Nicolet's wonderful Theatre Department, which came to a close today with our final production of the Glass Menagerie.

crazy german radio play |
] |
Listening to a German radio play on Berlin internet radio is the same thing as studying for my AP German exam, right? Right?
While I've not been listening carefully, and thus have no idea what the plot of said play is, I'm fairly certain that vampires are involved.
The vampire seems to be talking about communisim and coconuts. And now they're definately talking about anarchists. I feel like I've found my new favorite Sunday morning/afternoon activity.
Anyway, other things of interest in that are currently going on include the dawning of tech week, the twilight of Nicolet theatre, five very evil AP exams (English, German, Art, and Micro/Macro Econ), Mom coming on Thursday, getting ready for prom, and at some point finding a few minutes to breathe or sleep.
As I type this entry I realize that there was very little point to it, other than putting off doing my laundry, which I think I'll attend to now.
Wish me luck! (with the impending two weeks, not the laundry. I can probably handle the laundry)

The Second Time Around - Frank Sinatra |
] |
So by tomorrow I'm sure that the pressures of the drama fraught real world will have destroyed my fantastic mood, so for posterity, the following reasons are contributing to how happpy I am right now:
1 Frank Sinatra, Pandora 2 delicious hot chocolate, yummy chocolate hazelnut biscotti 3 Friday, Saturday, and Germantown 4 Queen's!!!! 5 Desperate Housewives in 11 minutes! 6 Spring, impending warmth, storms!
Details:
1. So I've heard bunches about this whole Pandora phenomenon, though it hasn't been until tonight that I've gotten to experiment with it. At the moment I have a wonderful and very classy station that seems to be based around the Rat Pack on. Sooooo classy.
2. Self explanatory
3. Friday was a massive monopoly playing/fajita making/movie watching/glow bowling extravaganza, which started around four in the afternoon and ended around one in the morning. The monopoly game was fairly intense, the fajitas were fucking delicious, the movies were really good (Dazed and Confused and the Princess Bride), glow bowling was hilarious, and the people were top notch. On Saturday I went to crew, and then Germantown where I saw Anything Goes, got to hang out with cool people who I never see, and watched four grown men pick up Anthony's car.
4. I'm 98% certain that that's where I'll be next year! Its in Kingston, Ontario, which is why you've never heard of it, though I promise that its a great school!
5. Look, we're all allowed to have our little guilty pleasures, okay? Stop judging me!
6. Its supposed to be in the 50's most of this week, which makes me excited beyond belief. Tuesday may even be cute skirt day!

On Monday I was in an excellent mood for no reason. On Tuesday I was in a pretty good mood for limited reasons. On Wednesday I was pretty irritated for what I suppose was a reason.
...Which is making me wonder what tomorrow is going to bring.
Also, tonight at crew I laid/drew out a piece of luwan (sp? its basically wood, for you non theatre-y people out there) backwards. So after Mr. M yelled at me for a while I offered to redraw it, and once again managed to draw it backwards.
This is because I am Amazing with a capital A.

So I feel like there's a ton of things that have happened recently that merit an update, but for the life of me I can't really think of them. Yesterday I went to Madison with Robyn and we popped around State Street, had delicious food from Kabul, and went to a rockin' concert. I've also managed to catch a nasty cold, which not only prevented me from giving blood this morning, but also meant that I got to take the afternoon off to sleep. Still, being snerk-y isn't all its cracked up to be, and hopefully I'll be well by Wednesday, at which point I leave to visit Mom, Dad, and Queen's.
Other things that may or may not be important or interesting but might prove to be fun in list form: - within a 24 hour period I drank 5 cups of tea, which is impressive considering that i kind of hate tea. - the hardcore disturbing sex scene in Taking Lives was actually a lot less impressive than Caitlin and I remembered it - Audrey and I baked a cake together, despite her being in MO and me being in WI while the cake was being baked. - as I type this entry I feel roughly 50 x better than I have in the past several days. - Devon estimates 6.5 but I disagree wholeheartedly. - My sister is pretty incredible.
So that's all for now. I feel like I'm going to reread this in a week and marvel at the incoherency of this entry, so until then!

The following (in no particular order) is a list of movies that people should see and love as much as I do.
City of God Transamerica Boondock Saints Poor White Trash Dangerous Beauty
These are all exceptionally good films. Failure to recognize them as such might result in extraordinarily violent beatings and verbal abuse. Possibly with the exception of Poor White Trash, which was just really, really amusing at the time.
That aside, life has been treating me decently as of late, providing me with equal measures of things to look forward to and things to dread. The looking forward to list includes getting into college, graduating, a very welcome summer, and the opportunity to spend more time with my family. The dread list includes getting rejected by colleges, AP's, and leaving everything all of this behind.
I'm sure that in a few years I'll look back on all of this uncertainty and anticipation with amusement, but for now its mostly just irritating. And unfortunately, now seems to be where I'm at.
Oh well, at least "now" involves a comfy warm bed to crawl into.

Do you ever think of a really good comeback literally two weeks after the fact? Because I just did.
Wow.
Other than that, life has been overwhelmingly sub-par as of late due to a combination of illness, too many things, and too little of other things*. But aside from the overall awfulness of the week, that have been some shining points, such as making Tansy Cake with Peppermint Cream and a fabulous new haircut.
Exams are about to descend, though the only one that I'm really worried about is Econ, which if I devote the next two days to it, is probably passable. I also need to look over English and German, but I'm fairly secure in my ability to not fail at either of those subjects. Mostly I just want the semester to be over so I can finally send my transcripts to the Canadian schools. Plus I'll be a second semester senior in like, a week, which is pretty exciting. I can only dream of the new opportunities that I'll have to slack!
Anyway, I feel the need to be productive right now, so I think I'll go take a crack at my econ notes… either that or read my lovely new Terry Pratchett book. Such a difficult decision...
*these things include SUNSHINE, as I've missed it every single time we've had it this week.
